Dourdan, in theEssonne region of France (91), is home to an extraordinary château built by Philippe Auguste in 1220, and a museum that welcomes us for an exceptional nocturne on Saturday, May 18, 2024, to mark the 20th Nuit des Musées.
For this year's European Museum Night, the Château de Dourdan museum is exceptionally opening its doors to visitors, free of charge, for a nocturnal exploration of the medieval site.
This 800-year-old château retraces part of the history of Dourdan, cradle of the Capetian dynasty. Numerous paintings, sculptures, furniture, postcards and archaeological objects can be admired on three levels. The last château built by Philippe Auguste around 1222, its regular layout is typical of the Philippian system. It has retained most of its defensive structures: dry moats, towers, entrance châtelet, curtain walls and a circular keep modelled on the Louvre.
Embellished by the Duke of Berry in the 15th century, as evidenced by the Très Riches Heures, it was converted into a prison in 1672. It housed prisoners until 1852. Purchased by a private individual, it was bequeathed to the Guyot family in 1863 and transformed into a private residence. Owned by the town since 1961, the building has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1964, and has undergone extensive restoration work.
In short, don't miss this Nuit des Musées 2024 to discover a unique medieval site in the Paris region, while enjoying the latest music from a talented local scene!
