Maria by Callas, the exhibition-event at La Seine Musicale, revisitsthe career of Greek singer Maria Callas. This says a lot about the venue, which has chosen the singer Maria Callas for its first exhibition: indeed, La Seine Musicale aims to be a venue open to classical music, with a 1,150-seat auditorium.
From September 16 to December 14, 2017, La Seine Musicale is exhibiting private recordings of her concerts, intimate letters, rare interview footage and vacation photos of the Diva, all on 800m². Born in New York to immigrant parents, Maria Callas was spotted for her vocal talent, and went on to perform minor roles at the Greek National Opera, before achieving international success.
Guided by the singer's spoken voice through easy-to-use headphones, the 3-hour tour includes previously unheard interviews and numerous live recordings, some of which have never been heard before . She speaks modestly and sympathetically about her family, and touches us with anecdotes from her family life.
Interspersed between these interludes are memories of Grace Kelly's private life, filmed during a vacation on Aristotle Onassis's boat in the 60s; audio and video interviews with Maria Callas surrounded by acquaintances such as Alain Delon, Georges Prêtre and Valery Giscard d'Estaing; 5,000 photos tracing Maria Callas's childhood and early stage career; costumes from her tours; and 300 letters and unfinished memoirs.
The sets, notably those of her Paris apartment at 36 avenue Georges Mandel, promise a rediscovery of the diva's daily life and fragility, as she tired of singing at the end of her life... She even said,"I'm here in Paris, quiet and doing nothing. I don't even feel like singing at the moment. I think I've sung enough in my life, that's enough."
This (re)discovery of Callas's musical repertoire leaves us speechless, and calls out to us about those female singers, often in the shadows, whom La Seine Musicale has set itself the goal of bringing to light. It's decided, we'll buy opera tickets and come back...
