Jean Fautrier, the exhibition at The City of Paris Museum of Modern Art

From January 26 to May 20, 2018, Paris Musée d’Art Moderne dedicates a great exhibition to the painter Jean Fautrier (1898-1964). Through 160 works, we gladly rediscover this major and singular modern artist. Don’t miss it!

There are artists, who paint alone, far from the madding crowd and yet, they leave their mark on the world. Jean Fautrier is a painting magician whose colors and forms talk about dreaming and forgetting proprieties.

The City of Paris Museum of Modern Art path offers a complete retrospective of the painter’s career, from his first nudes and still lives, sensible studies from his youth, to the sparks of the end of his career.

Far from codes, the artist is an all-rounder: the 160 works exhibited present about a hundred paintings, drawings, etchings and sculptures. Close to Jean Dubuffet because of his boldness and the liberty of his practice, Jean Fautrier develops an art where figurative makes way to experimentations on materials and colors.

We look at his canvases like we look at a landscape, we pay a close attention to crevices, reliefs, how the light is coming, how spectral shapes look.

A wonderful exhibition to discover the whole range of talents of this atypical artist!
