When art in all its shapes and modernism meet… This is what proposes Centre Pompidou through an exhibition dedicates to the U.A.M., aka the Union des Artistes Modernes [the French Union of Modern Artists], one of the major movements in this art history of the last century. Architects, painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers, furniture designers, fabric makers, graphists and poster artists… The avant-garde of modernism is exhibited here in order to bring a lost image back to life since the association created in 1929 has been winded up in 1958.
Gathering 170 members together including Henri Laurens, René Herbst, Louis Sognot, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Jean Prouvé, Eileen Gray, Pierre Chareau and the most famous of them all, Le Corbusier, the union aimed at permanently experimenting shapes, technologies, materials and even colors in artists’ creations.
The exhibition proposed by Centre Pompidou presents “a crossing of the whole French modern movement, from the early 20th century to the late 1950’s”. A portrayal of French modernism brought up to date thanks to the exhibition.
