After the incredible loans of the MOMA and the Chtchoukine collection that attracted crowds, the Fondation Louis Vuitton gives pride of place to major artists through exceptional retrospective exhibitions. From October 3 to January 14, 2019, the art foundation located in Paris Bois de Boulogne offers us to know more about Egon Schiele’s and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s works.
For these two exhibitions, the Fondation Louis Vuitton draws in its special collections, collections started in 1990, when LVMH decided to start a patronage in favor of art and culture, supporting young artists, by purchasing works and renovating historical monuments.
So, the Basquiat exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton returns on the whole career of the New-York-based artists, focusing on about hundred of his most determining works, from 1980 to 1988. Obviously, we find the Heads series from 1981-1982, and ensembles never exhibited in Europe before such as Obnoxious Liberals (1982, Broad Art Foundation collection), In Italian (1983, Brant Foundation collection) and Riding with Death (1988, private collection). Works displayed will create a trip to the underground New York from the 80’s, a city where hip-hop, graffiti and primitive art are a way to escape from poverty, unemployment and AIDS!
If the list of the exhibited works is still unknown, we already know this exhibition will be one of the major one in Paris, this winter 2018/2019, a wonderful exhibition about an artist with a thick practice and an unfortunately short career.
More information to come, we will be the first to keep you posted…
