Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of the most remarkable painters of his generation is the subject of an exhibition displayed from October 3, 2018 to January 21, 2019 at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. After the Fondation’s first exhibitions, we expect a gathering of the master’s most important pieces, including Riding with Death!

From October 3, 2018 to January 21, 2019, the Fondation Louis Vuitton gives pride of place to an exhibition focusing on Jean-Michel Basquiat. Initially plannd until January 14, the exhibition will enjoy extra time until Monday January 21, 2019 and open from Tuesday January 15 to Monday 21, every day with extended time slots: from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Around 120 works of art, the exhibition returns to his short but striking career. The chronologic tour takes us to the New York of the 80's through 12 large and well-fitted rooms.

For 10 years of career, Jean-Michel Basquiat managed to impose his underground style in a city where hip-hop, graffiti and primitive art are a way to escape poverty, unemployment and AIDS!

Obviously, we find the Heads series from 1981-1982, and ensembles never exhibited in Europe before such as Obnoxious Liberals (1982, Broad Art Foundation collection), In Italian (1983, Brant Foundation collection) and Riding with Death (1988, private collection) as well as works created in partnership with Andy Warhol.

Most of the works creating this exhibition come from the Fondation Louis Vuitton, from the private collections, collections started in 1990 when LVMH decided to take sponsorship actions for art and culture by supporting young artists and purchasing works and renovating historic buildings.

At the same time of this very beautiful exhibition about Basquiat, the Fondation Louis Vuitton displays an Egon Schiele retrospective, an artist from the 1910's with a dense content and an unfortunately short career.

Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
