For its new exhibition, La Monnaie de Paris invites Subodh Gupta, a contemporary Indian artist applauded worldwide for his work in metal, in works and installations that resonate with our times. His carte blanche of 30 works is a must-see until August 26, 2018!

Subodh Gupta is the special guest at La Monnaie de Paris in 2018. For his carte blanche"Adda/Rendez-vous" on view until August 26, 2018, the Indian visual artist will present 30 works to the Parisian public, including 2 works created for thein situ exhibition.

Subodh Gupta (b. 1964) is best known for his work with everyday Indian objects. His most famous work, Very Hungry God (2006), depicts a skull made of steel utensils, to underline the need to feed an increasingly hungry god.

This critique is often echoed in the artist's work. Subodh Gupta immortalizes housework, with symbolic works such as Atta (2010), a painted bronze, flour and wooden table installation; Faith Matters (2007-2008), an installation featuring brass bowls (characteristic of India) on a subshi conveyor belt; Two Cows (2003-2008), milk buckets on bronze bicycles, his best-known work.
In another register, Subodh Gupta often speaks of departure and exile: a brass door(Door, 2007), a wooden boat filled with pots held together by ropes(Jal Mein Kumbh, Kumbh Mein Jal Hai [The Pot is in the Water, and the Water is in the Pot], 2012), or an aluminum car(Doot, 2003)....
And, as the icing on the cake, the Monnaie de Paris offers a fine exhibition on India and medals, with 45 objects (including medals, art fonts and the Taj kilo coin) including 3 works by Subodh Gupta questioning money in the world in the rooms of the Musée 11 Conti: an ingot 1 K.G. War (2007), A Penny for Belief, a brass tray with pennies (2008) or Apples Of The Earth (2018) .
Aurélien Rousseau, CEO of La Monnaie de Paris, explains that "The meeting of our universe with that of Subodh Gupta is a unique opportunity. Unique because our work is in precious metal. Gupta, too, works with metal and its significance in today's India. This shiny metal, without being precious, becomes an art object that questions where beauty can reside in our societies. Just look at the way Subodh took over our workshops, and how he immediately found his bearings in the world of our engravers, in our factory."
We can't wait to see!

Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
