A new Giacometti exhibition is held at the Musée Maillol from September 14, 2018 to February 3, 2019. We’ve seen him a bit everywhere: at the Musée Picasso, at the Institut Giacometti, at the Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian… it’s simple, Alberto Giacometti is on everyone’s lips.
Each exhibition is important: at the Musée Maillol, Giacometti sees his works talk with great classic sculptors as well as artists emblematic of the modernity.
About 50 sculptures by Giacometti rub shoulders with 25 sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Antoine Bourdelle, Aristide Maillol, Charles Despiau, Constantin Brancusi, Henri Laurens, Jacques Lipchitz, Ossip Zadkine, Joseph Csaky and even Germaine Richier.
Entitled “Entre tradition et modernité” [Between tradition and modernity], the exhibition follows a chronological and thematic path. Two major parts give structure to the subject. First of all, are displayed works created during Giacometti’s youth, then sculptures marking the changes rose from his meeting with Parisian avant-gardes circa 1925.
Please note: the sculpture tour is filled with a selection of graphic works of art and archive documents. Also, you can have a beautiful glimpse of what Giacometti’s Parisian studio looked like thanks to a bunch of prints of the artists and photographs taken by the greatest names of the photography in the 20th century such as Brassai, Denise Colomb, Sabine Weiss and Herbert Matter.
