While a bamboo basket may seem like a basic item to us, the Japanese elevated it to the status of a masterpiece at the start of the Meiji era, when tea ceremonies became an important part of city life. Why did this happen? Tea ceremonies called for flower arrangements (Ikebana) in bamboo containers, plain and simple!

Theart of Japanese bamboobasketry was born of increasingly elaborate techniques for weaving bamboo fiber: boxes, vases, jars, lighting fixtures and decorative objects, Japanese craftsmen were able to push back the physical limits of this material.

Even today, this art continues to develop, with some hundred craftsmen creating fascinating bamboo objects after years of training and practice.
For the exhibition Fendre l'air, l'art du bambou, the Musée du Quai Branly commissioned 7 contemporary artists. Iizuka Rokansai (1890-1958), considered to be the major reference in Japanese basketry today, is particularly honored. An opportunity to discover this little-known art form and learn more about Japanese culture. Shall we take a look around, folks?

Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
