When literature inspires painting... This is the idea behind a major retrospective of the work of British painter Francis Bacon at the Centre Pompidou, entitled Francis Bacon en toute lettre, from September 11, 2019 to January 20, 2020. This monograph follows the major exhibitions devoted to Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, André Derain and Henri Matisse by the Parisian cultural establishment.
The exhibition focuses on"the relationship between his paintings and his literary interests", since the artist loudly asserted that"literature was a powerful stimulus to his imagination". The literary domain seems to inspire in Bacon"a 'general atmosphere', 'images' cut off from their original context". And a pivotal period around this inspiration: 1971-1992, two decades that correspond for the artist to that of"the overcoming, the uprooting of his painting, from matter, from chaos" from which his first figures emerge.
Authors such as Aeschylus, Nietsche, Bataille, Conrad, Leiris and Eliot shared similar"poetic and stylistic values" with the painter, and the paintings in the exhibition can be compared with them. This is the"ultimate phase" of his work, in which he sees the"immaculate art" that characterizes him and is"his artistic horizon". A retrospective to be discovered as a matter of urgency.
