Doisneau and Music at Paris Philharmonie – Musée de la Musique: Our pictures

Paris Musée de la Musique at the Philharmonie dedicates an exhibition to Doisneau and music from December 4, 2018 to April 28, 2019.

If singer’s name Doisneau doesn’t ring a bell, it’s because Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) was a photographer and not any kind of photographer. A curious Philharmonie artist has decided to give him pride of place through an exhibition called Doisneau and Music from December 4, 2018 to April 28, 2019. A photographer who knew everyone in Paris and particularly in the music field, hence the pertinence of this retrospective for the Cité de la Musique.

The idea of this exhibition: unveiling "the musical sense of the imaginary and work" of Robert Doisneau. Equipped with his inseparable camera, he roamed Paris and its surroundings in every way. Parisians in the streets, dances, restaurants without forgetting cabarets, Robert Doisneau took pictures of Paris and met thousands of jazz musicians and stars from his time period.

His amused look over the world gave him a true visual identity, allowing him to get orders from newspapers. During his career, he even immortalized a large number of artists including actors, writers and musicians. He even worked for Vogue magazine from 1949 to 1951!

When he died in April 1994, after 60 years of taking pictures, he leaves 450,000 negatives that tell his time era with enjoyment. For this exhibition, some 200 photographs have been brought together for the first time by the photographer's grand-daughter, Clémentine Deroudille.

We find pictures of Georges Brassens, Juliette Gréco, Charles Aznavour, Claude François… as well as Kentucky Club, a jazz club from the 50’s in Paris 5th arrondissement, pictures of 21-year old Gréco as well as Prévert smoking by the Canal Saint-Martin and Rita Mitsouko for a photo shoot in the La Villette Park for a vinyl record sleeve.

The exhibition is displayed with music by Moriarty and staged by the band graphist and musician Stephan Zimmerli. The aim? Making us relieve the joyful atmosphere of Robert Doisneau's walks. An exhibition combining music and photos and that will likely delight fans of both art universes.
