L'Orient des peintres, du rêve à la lumière, the exhibition at the Musée Marmottan-Monet from March 7 to July 21, 2019, highlights the works of French painters who traveled to the Orient.
This exhibition complements the Musée Marmottan-Monet's exhibition devoted to Napoleon and his family. Theexhibition takes us to the Mediterranean Orient, typical of the French colonial empire, and features two types of painting: portraits and landscapes.
At the start of theexhibition, l'Orient des Peintres, we find Ingres and Delacroix, surrounded by their disciples, who had gone to the Orient, Ingres immortalizing the Grande Odalisque (editor's note: harem woman), Delacroix and Chassériau bringing a more real but no less classical vision of the countries.
"L'atelier du voyage" brought a knowledge of Oriental architecture and decorative arts, and led to a search for harmony between the human body and the odalisque, the harem woman. Above all, these journeys led to a renewal of the color spectrum: faced with the dazzling light of the Orient and unknown natural spectacles, painters invented new ways of painting .
FromGérôme and Landelle to Vallotton, not forgetting Migonney, Bernard, Matisse and even Paul Klee, theOrient des Peintres exhibition reveals how a visit to the fantasized Orient turned into a voyage of initiation for European painters, who returned transformed and offering new works.
