The Fondation Louis Vuitton honors the Courtauld Collection, from February 20 to June 17, 2019. More than 110 Impressionist works belonging to industrialist Samuel Courtauld, including Van Gogh's Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, are reunited for the first time in Paris!

The Fondation Louis Vuitton continues to honor great art collections with the Samuel Courtauld Collection exhibition, from February 20 to June 17, 2019.

A leading textile manufacturer and art collector, Samuel Courtauld (1876 -1947, England) quickly developed an interest in French modern art: Manet, Degas, Renoir and Cézanne, whose work he really appreciated. Thanks to the network of his advisor Percy Moore Turner, he made regular trips to Paris to buy Impressionist works, building up a fine collection in just 8 years.

Among the treasures of this collection, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is featuring Manet's Bar aux Folies-Bergère , Cézanne's Les Joueurs de cartes , Gauguin's Nevermore , Renoir's La Loge, Degas' Après le bain , Modigliani's Nu féminin , Van Gogh' sAutoportrait à l'oreille bandée and ten watercolors by J.M.W. Turner that once belonged to Samuel Courtauld's brother!

For a simpler, more coherent reading of the exhibition, its layout is chronological, tracing the development of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism from the 1860s onwards. Sections are devoted to major artistic figures, including Cézanne, whose work Samuel Courtauld owns 13 of.

And on the last three levels and the Fondation's terrace, we are presented with Le parti de la peinture, a new selection of 70 works from the Louis Vuitton collection, assembled from the 1960s to the present day. Painting is explored in all its diversity: figurative or abstract, expressive or distanced.

Artists include Joan Mitchell, Alex Katz, Gerhard Richter, Ettore Spalletti, Yayoi Kusama and Jesús Rafael Soto. The idea behind this selection is to show"how painting never ceases to reinvent itself and break its own rules, drawing on current reproduction techniques".

This exhibition is a unique opportunity to rediscover in Paris some of the greatest French paintings of the late 19th century, in the magnificent setting of the Fondation Louis Vuitton.
