Italian drawings from the Collection Mariette, the exhibition at the Louvre

From June 27 to September 30, 2019 the Louvre dedicates an exhibition to the Collection Mariette. An exhibition focusing this time on Italian drawing, following a retrospective about French drawings from the collection back in 2011.

The art of Italian drawing in all its glory… The Louvre offers an exhibition about the Collection Mariette from June 27 to September 30, 2019. And after French drawings in 2011, it’s Italian drawings’ and great Italian masters’ turn to be given pride of place through a unique retrospective.

Last representative “of a celebrated dynasty of sketching sellers”, accepted as “free associate” at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, Pierre-Jean Mariette won fame with several art disciplines: engraving, drawing, translating, art criticizing, writing… But it’s mostly as a collector we know him. A universal collection “summarizing as perfectly as possible the story of drawing”, collecting drawings by big names of painting.

All in all, about sixty sheets coming from his very own collection are displayed to visitors aiming at allowing drawing enthusiasts to enjoy the right value of this part of the Collection Mariette “that takes part mostly in its author’s pleasure and pride”. Raphaël, Michel-Angelo, Veronese, Guercino, Titian, Reni, The Carracci… As many great artists from the Italian painting to discover in a new light. Shall we go there, friends?
