Greco exhibition at the Louvre

From October 14, 2019 to February 10, 2020, the Louvre dedicates an exhibition to Cretan artist Domenico Theotokopoulos aka “El Greco” founder of the Spanish School of the 16th century.

An artist with multiple influences… From October 14, 2019 to February 10, 2020, the Louvre offers a retrospective around Cretan artist Domenico Theotokopoulos also known as El Greco. An exhibition focusing on the founder of the Spanish School of the 16th century who completed his apprenticeship in the Byzantine traditional before perfecting his art and training in Venice, then in Rome before blossoming in Spain.

The aim of this exhibition is to present “this rich face” and the multiple facets of the artist who managed to instill in his paintings, import into his work, through his movings and apprenticeships, “Titian color, Tintoretto boldness and Michelangelo art”. A synthesis that gives to Greco “a particular spot in the history of painting: as the last Renaissance master and the first master of the golden century”.

A major artist that link tradition and modernity, rediscovered in the late 19th century and “renown and adopted by the avant-garde artists of the early 20th century”. An “insatiable inventor of shapes” linking “Titian to Les Fauves, mannerism to cubism, expressionism to abstraction”, to discover throughout a unique exhibition, the very first big monographic retrospective dedicated to the painted to be ever displayed in France and designed in partnership with Art Institute Chicago. Shall we go have a tour, then, friends?
