The Grand Palais is devoting an exhibition to Cretan artist Domenico Theotokopoulos, known as "El Greco", founder of the 16th-century Spanish School, from October 14, 2019 to February 10, 2020.

An artist of many influences... the Grand Palais is offering a retrospective focusing on the work of Cretan artist Domenico Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, from October 14, 2019 to February 10, 2020. The exhibition focuses on the founder of the 16th-century Spanish School, who began his apprenticeship in the Byzantine tradition, before perfecting his art and training in Venice and Rome, before flourishing in Spain.

The aim of this exhibition is to present"this rich face" and the multiple facets of the artist that he was able to instill in his works. Through his travels and apprenticeships, he imported into his work"the color of Titian, the boldness of Tintoretto and the plastic strength of Michelangelo". A synthesis that gives El Greco"a special place in the history of painting: that of the last great master of the Renaissance and the first great painter of the Golden Age".

The exhibition also offers a more scientific vision of El Greco's work, through"the painter's impressive transformation in his early years, from the art of the icon to his aesthetic adherence to the Venetian current; his inventions and variations, which allow us to measure the innovative character of his art on the same theme and to follow [...] his sensibility, more humanist than mystical, his spiritual, fiery and literary temperament.

A "keystone" artist bridging the gap between tradition and modernity, rediscovered at the end of the 19th century and"recognized and adopted by the avant-gardes of the early 20th century". An"insatiable inventor of forms" linking"Titian to the Fauves, Mannerism to Cubism, Expressionism and Abstraction", to be discovered in a unique exhibition. And with good reason: this is the very first major monographic retrospective devoted to the painter to be held in France! The exhibition was conceived in partnership with theArt Institute of Chicago. The retrospective is supported by the Aurel BGC Group and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in Athens. Shall we take a look, folks?

Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
