Opening June 14, 2019, the City of Economy in Paris aims at becoming an initiation place and a research place for curious people. Set within the same building as Banque de France, let in its previous state, vaults included.

It’s the very first museum devoted to the Economy in Europe: created by Banque de France, the Cité de l’Economie (or Citéco or City of the Economy) is a beautiful proposition aiming at “giving some meaning to the big society debates” by simply explaining the major economic principles.

Set in a former Banque de France branch, set near the Parc Monceau, Citéco has decided to show the vestiges of its past (safe deposit rooms, director’s office, inspector’s office among others).

As soon as you come in, you watch a short movie presenting the major economic issues: production, consumption, exchange and currency that involve every single one of us every day.

Citéco aims at being attractive, even for children: revolving around 6 themed areas, you’re introduced with examples and games to trade, economic players, “treasures” (surrounding the notion of market and currency values), markets, instability and regulations.

For instance, you have a faux airport scan offering us to know from where the elements of the electronic devices come from, a way to concretely show the international market. In another room, several visitors have to work together to develop renewable energies and reach a common goal without “loosing too much”.

Does it remind you of the Cité des Sciences? Indeed, the Cité de l’Economie has been entrusted to Xavier Limagne, the curator of an exhibition devoted to the introduction to the economy at the Cité des Sciences. The latter presents the project: “for the Cité de l’Economie, the idea is to explain that economic sciences are human sciences. We want to give to the public the tools and words to understand economic concepts. But also trigger a debate”.

Except that anyone who studied economy knows that the different schools of thoughts lead to very different conclusions and propositions. The Cité de l’Economie claims that it presents the different existing minds, with liberal, Keynesian, Marxist public political propositions. A necessity to tackle this easy science!

All year long, Citéco will provide conferences and debates in its auditorium, teaching workshops and temporary exhibitions.
