The Palais d’Iéna – Conseil économique, social et environnemental (CESE – Economic, Social and Environmental Committee) invites Giuseppe Penone for FIAC 2019, an expected return in Paris since his major exhibition at the Palace of Versailles. The Italian artist and leading advocate of the arte povera (poor art) uses raw and noble materials such as wood, marble or even stone and water for meaningful and symbolical works.
For his major return in Paris, from October 15 to 27, 2019, Penone has been given free rein to host the large hypostyle room of the Palais d’Iéna, a wonderful room with over 7-m tall columns. In collaboration with the Galerie Marian Goodman, the artist chose to present his monumental work Matrice di linfa (or Lifeblood matrix) measuring 43-m long and accompanied by two new sculptures especially made for the venue.
His Matrice fi linfa has been made with a century-old conifer from the Vallée des Merveilles (or Valley of Marvels) in French Alps of which Penone scrubed a volume of eighty years of growth, telling then about “a long sacrificial altar”. A strong echo to the environmental actions of the CESE and the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Auguste Perret’s architectural masterpiece!
