ParisOpéra Comique as you’ve never seen it before… This is what the cultural venue in Paris 2nd arrondissement offers you for the 36thedition of European Heritage Days, on Sunday September 22, 2019. A theater offering this year tours for the whole family backstage to know all the story behind this institution.
The Opéra Comique was created under the reign of Louis XVI, in 1714 by Catherine Baron – who was the first director – and Gautier de Saint-Edme, two members of a carny company rejected by the Comédie-Française and the Académie Royale de Musique (current Opéra Garnier). A company that did more into pantomime and opera parody. It’s in 1714 too that the company is authorized to have its own theater, but on the condition that spoken dialogs should be inserted between songs. Today, the authorized repertoire got bigger and extended to baroque music and contemporary music.
European Heritage Days are the occasion to learn more about the story of the institution that cast shadow at the Comédie-Française. Free tours (from 10 a.m.t o 6 p.m.) or guided tours (from 10:15 a.m. to 6 p.m., by registration) are provided to visitors including a tour backstage and the costume studios. Also note that a makeup workshop is planned for children along with many surprises! Let’s book our Sunday, shall we?
