In conjunction with the Festival d'Automne de Paris, from November 25, 2019 to January 6, 2020, the Centre Pompidou invites director Richard Linklater. For the first time, we're presenting a retrospective of all his films, with the theme common to all of them: time.

For 30 years now, independent filmmaker Richard Linklater has been depicting space and time in a highly singular, sometimes paradoxical way. From November 25, 2019 to January 6, 2020, the Centre Pompidou is devoting an exceptional retrospective to Linklater, bringing together all his films for the first time to better understand his thinking and his approach to time.

When Slacker was released in 1990 and Dazed and Confused (known in France as Génération rebelle) in 1993, it was a critical and public success. This success is certainly due to the fluid direction, but also to the feat of representing, in just one day of filming, the wholespirit of a generation. Without crude caricature, but fair, he manages to conjure up a very realistic imaginary world. He captures the spirit of his generation as it comes of age, while rejecting its codes.

This animated realist painting is a punch in the face of the American cinematic landscape. And one of the foundations of Linklater's cinema is already there, and worked to perfection : time.

He films characters moving through time, we see them grow up, we see ages and generations meeting, hating each other, fighting. He films time in all its human dimensions.

How does one become an adult? What are the rituals of passage from one age to another? How does love deal with time? To answer these questions, the Centre Pompidou invites the filmmaker to present 26 films and a collection of photographs to better understand his thoughts and work.

Time is not just about Richard Linklater's films in this retrospective. It's also about understanding the director's intimate relationship with this phenomenon. How has time shaped his work, how does he live with time? He answers these questions with the never-before-seen short film Where are you now, Richard Linklater? He tells us his story through seminal events while taking stock of the person he is.

On Saturday, November 30, 2019, keep this date in mind, the director honors us with his presence at an exceptional masterclass at 5pm!

Don't be late, it would be a shame to miss such an opportunity!
