The exhibition L'Inde, au miroir des photographes unveils 90 original prints of photographic works, to be discovered from November 6, 2019 and extended until March 23, 2020. Through these exceptional photographs, the Musée Guimet offers a new look at daily life in this country during the second half of the 19th century. Confronted with these old snapshots, let yourself be drawn in by the many portraits and scenes of life captured by photographers in India.

Theexhibition offers both a trip to the other side of the world and a journey through time. Relive the rise of photography in India after 1850, through the photographs on display. The country, then a British colony, initially aroused the artistic tastes of the military. Sergeant Linnaeus Tripe, stationed in India, for example, produced a series of photographs that was voted " best series of photographic views on paper " in 1854. Some of these rare prints can be seen at the Musée Guimet.

The different regions of India are home to fabulous landscapes with spectacular features. The photos in this exhibition present the beauties captured by the photographers through views of Kashmir, Dehli, Agra or Varanasi, or the most famous monuments such as the Taj Mahal. These were the first images taken of the former colony. Photographs that appeared in the Western press at the time and that forged the image of the country, reflecting its richness and variety.

Thanks to this exhibition, relive the artistic development of photography in India and discover19th-century India, a fascinating land and an inexhaustible source of landscapes for photographers. After your visit to the exhibition, don't hesitate to take a look at the museum's permanent collections and the Asia Now exhibition, accessible with your ticket to India.
