Paris Musée Guimet paints a portrait of India with the “L’Inde au miroir des photographes” exhibition running from Wednesday November 6, 2019 to Monday February 17, 2020. Discover the pictures that make the grandiose image of this country in the eyes of Western people in the 19th century.

The “ L'Inde, au miroir des photographes” exhibition unveils 90 original prints of photographic works to discover from November 6, 2019 to February 17, 2020. Through these exceptional photographs, the musée Guimet provides a new look on the daily life of this country during the second half of the 19th century. Facing these ancient pictures, let yourself be attracted by the many portraits and life scenes as shot by photographers in India.

The exhibition offers both a travel to the other side of the world and a travel in time. Relive the rise of photography in India, after 1850, through the displayed pictures. The country, then a British colony, triggers first the artistic fibers of soldiers. Sergeant Linnaeus Tripe – in place in India – has for instance made a series of pictures that has been elected “best series of photographs on paper” in 1854. A few of these rare prints are to be discovered at the Musée Guimet.

The different Indian regions are filled with fantastic landscapes with spectacular particularities. Pictures of the exhibition present beauties shot by photographers through Kashmir, Delhi, Agra and Varanasi or the most famous monuments such as the Taj Mahal. The first pictures show us the former colony. Pictures we could already find back in the days in the western press and that made the image of the country, reflecting its wealth and variety.

Thanks to this exhibition, relive the artistic development of photography in India and discover India in the 19th century, a fascinating land and an inexhaustible source of landscapes for photographers. After visiting this exhibition, don’t hesitate to have a look at the museum’s permanent collection and the “L'Asie maintenant” exhibition, open with your ticket to India.
