The Musée du Luxembourg is devoting an exhibition to Man Ray and fashion photography from September 23, 2020 to January 17, 2021. This artist has already been featured in a retrospective at the Grand Palais in 1998, and again at the Pinacothèque in 2008. The exhibition remains closed until further notice.

Man Ray in a new light... This is what the Musée du Luxembourg is offering with a major retrospective devoted to the photographer, entitled Man Ray et la Mode, from September 23, 2020 to January 17, 2021. Man Ray has already been the subject of numerous exhibitions, notably in 1998 at the Grand Palais and in 2008 at the Pinacothèque de Paris. The exhibition remains closed until further notice.

Why a new angle? Because fashion is one aspect of Man Ray 's career that has never been explored in exhibitions in France. A truly new vision of the artist, yet one that remains rooted in the modernity that so characterizes him. Much more than a photographer, Man Rey is"one of the protagonists of Parisian artistic life between the wars and of Surrealism", having contributed to"the emancipation of fashion photography". Coco Chanel, Kiki de Montparnasse, Marie-Laure de Nouailles, Nancy Cunard, Peggy Guggenheim... So many personalities from the world of fashion and social circles that the artist rubbed shoulders with and captured on film.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore"the permanent enrichment that exists between 'art for art's sake' and commissioned productions". At the heart of this enrichment is Man Ray's iconic photograph Larmes, a typical example of artistic production at the heart of advertising commissions, since the photograph was originally an advertisement for a brand of mascara.

Original prints, as well as large-format contemporary prints, are exhibited alongside models from the fashion houses he worked for. An opportunity to rediscover one of the most emblematic photographers of his time... Shall we go, friends?
