The Musée d’Orsay pays tribute to painter Léon Spilliaert by displaying from October 13, 2020 to January 10, 2021 ‘Light and Solitude’. Over 90 works of art highlight the artist’s special style at the limits of different painting movements.

The musée d'Orsay highlights Leon Spilliaert in a retrospective named Light and Solitude running from October 13, 2020 to January 10, 2021. This exhibition is focusing on four major paintings coming from the collections of the Musée d’Orsay and 90 works coming from Belgian and American museums. Walk along with Léon Spilliaert in his inner journey and discover his unique universe.

Exhibited works only represent a sole part of the painter’s career: this selection emphasizes the artist’s favorite topics. Leon Spilliaert plays with shadows and the dark to make figures stand out, as well as the silhouette of his city, Ostende and solitary and lost faces.

His art swings between symbolism, expressionism and minimalism. The artist remains free of any artistic rule and experiments new things. The exhibition shows as many drawings made with India ink as charcoal drawings, pastels, watercolors, gouaches and chalks… This diversity of techniques highlights the nuances of his subjects he explores to the obsession.

Dive in the dark corners of the artist’s unconscious and let light emerge little by little. An inner and fascinating journey to discover a peculiar artist. Don’t forget to give a go to the permanent collections of the Musée d’Orsay and enjoy the current and temporary exhibitions like the James Tissot retrospective.
