The musée Maillol is ultimately reopening after the coronavirus crisis and ventures into the unknown and calls the spirits of painters with the “Spirit are you there? The Painters of the Beyond” exhibition. About a hundred works are gathered on the occasion, coming from public and private collections. From June 10 to November 1, 2020 come and meet these artists inspired by supernatural forces…
Three major painters are given pride of place: Augustin Lesage, Victor Simon and Fleury-Joseph Crépin. These three men started to paint, motivated by strange voices. These invisible guides led them, and all the artists represented in this collection to establish a connection with the beyond through their paintings.
These paintings have striking details, they are very thorough and symmetrical. We find many influences in these works from the 19th and 20th centuries: many symbols remind us of religion and the Christian, Hindi or Egyptian cultures. Spiritualist painters have developed their own style we named “art brut” or outsider art: an art gathering prisoners, crazy people, anarchists and mystics.
This art movement is still going on, perhaps maintained by the spirits of painters from the 20th century. Video clips, installations, archive documents and contemporary works complete this exhibition and reveal the evolution and the new methods of spiritualist artists.
Old objects used for spiritism seances offer a rather fun approach to the subject. All along the visit, we are impressed by how big and rich the works displayed are. Bizarre stories accompanying these paintings are just as fascinatings ar paintings.
Careful though, superstitious this is something you want to be aware of... The sound atmosphere, especially the last room of the exhibition may have you stay awake at night. The Musée Maillol recreated a spiritism parlor and plays, in a very dark setting, a reconstitution of seances and surnatural experiments artists diplayed experienced. We love this nice thrilling and fascinating touch. After all, perhaps spirits were there, visiting the exhibition with us...
And to keep you safe in the living world, the musuem set up visit-special requirements, such as mandatory booking online for timeslots, mandatory facemasks within the museum, body temperature check at the entrance, and hand sanitizer available, or even a one-meter distance with other visitors. Please also note that for safety matters, the number of visitors will be significantly cut off.
Are you ready to dive into a mysterious and sacred world? Will you listen to the spirits’ voices talking to you through the paintings displayed at the Musée Maillol? Be part of this new adventure and discover a special universe, at the limit of the living world and beyond.
To recover from your emotions, relax with the soft colors and quiet scenes of the paintings displayed in the Turner, peintures et aquarelles de la Tate exhibition at the musée Jacquemart André or the Golden Age of the Danish painting exhibition at the Petit Palais.
