Over 50 paintings present Soutine, “the cursed artist” and the “prophet” of a new king mixing abstract expressionism and figurative art. Very quickly, Chaïm Soutine becomes a major source of inspiration for Willem de Kooning. The American artist managed to get the tension between figurative art and abstract art that characterizes Soutine’s work. Through the paintings displayed in this exhibition, we find the researches, trials and thoughts that led to the creation of a new artistic genre.
The exhibition also highlights key moments of the meeting of the two artists. If they never met, De Kooning has had a true revelation when discovering Chaïm Soutine’s paintings for exhibitions in the United States. A small page of art history is told here, to satisfy your curiosity and enables you to shine for your next society outings.
this series of portraits shows a mute dialog developing between the two painters. Although very different, these works with a hypnotizing style seem to answer one another and echo one another. The colors - dark on one hand, shiny on the other hand -, deformed faces, looks attract us and make us wonder. Because of the difference in colors, the topic or the emotion, some paintings catch us to never let go of us.
