The Petit Palais gives pride of place to Ambroise Vollard in an exhibition called “Limited Edition, Vollard, Petiet and Modern Master Prints”. This retrospective takes us behind the scene of the art market, before commerce of etchings and the promotion of the time’s great masters. Enter Vollard’s world, an art-focused universe, from May 19 to August 29, 2021.
The Petit Palais exhibition makes us discover Vollard’s daily life. Great name from the art market between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, Vollard specifically enjoyed working in issuing etchings and rare books. You will find an exceptional collection of etchings donated to the museum by Ambroise Vollard himself or by his heirs.
To finance his passion, the art dealer managed to negotiate and sell paintings by great masters, paintings by artists he noticed at the beginning of their careers and he promoted: Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, George-Henri Rouault… Their works filled the display and offer a more complete vision of Vollard’s business life.
Some part of the retrospective is dedicated to Henri Petiet, a dealer who bought the collection of the Vollard gallery. The man was known as a talent finder as well: he supported sculptor Aristide Maillol, painters Marie Laurencin and Jean-Emile Laboureur… This part completes the exhibition and gives even more works to enjoy and stories to learn.
The “Limited Edition” display takes us on an interesting dive into the world of art dealers, between negotiations, passion, and discoveries of future art masterpieces. An exhibition you do not want to miss if you love discovering new views and find famous paintings we all love. Do not forget to give a go to the permanent collections of the Petit Palais: they are free of charge!
