Due to the coronavirus epidemic and measures adopted by the French government, the Fondation Cartier is closing starting March 13th 2020 indefinitely.

The Fondation Cartier devotes an exhibition to a cause and a photographer it has been supporting for a while: Claudia Andujar presents her work around the Yanomami people. Named “The Yanomami Struggle”, the exhibition brings together over 300 photographs, drawings, historic documents and an audiovisual installation to make us discover this Brazilian Amazonian people. From January 30 to May 10, 2020 go on an impressive and meaningful trip.

For several years, Brazilian photographer Claudia Andujar has been sharing the daily life and struggles of the Yanomamis, an Amazonian people. In this exhibition displayed at the Fondation Cartier, we find hundreds of pictures telling us about life, joys, rituals, and fights of the Yanomamis. The latter defend their rights and the forest they’ve been living in and fight against politicians and companies sacking the forest.

Claudia Andujar’s works are as aesthetic as political. The colors, the black and white pictures, the drawings by the photographer, the video installation, they all convey an essential message, this fight Yanomamis have been leading against the deforestation and the jeopardizing of their lifestyle.

Through the pictures – many of them being displayed for the first time – the artist shows emotions, intimacy and the culture of her subjects. Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, shaman and spokesperson for the Yanomami people hopes his story will make him known so that his people and their fights can finally be respected.

Come and discover the Yanomami Struggle exhibition at the Fondation Cartier and get to know a rich culture facing the protection of their environment.
