Lovers of primitive art are invited to the Musée du Quai Branly to discover the exhibition Olmecs and the Cultures of the Gulf of Mexico, from May 19 to October 3, 2021. An opportunity to learn more about the Olmec civilization and the little-known world of pre-Columbian cultures of the Gulf of Mexico.

A unique plunge into pre-Columbian cultures... This is what the Musée du Quai Branly has in store for you with its exhibition, The Olmecs and the Cultures of the Gulf of Mexico, which reopens its doors from May 19 to October 3, 2021. The aim of this retrospective is to"highlight the richness of Olmec culture and its dissemination in time and space".

But what is Olmec culture? It was in the heart of the Gulf of Mexico,"on marshy land south of the present-day states of Veracruz and Tabasco", that this rich culture (from the word Olmán, "land of rubber") developed, one of the most important and mysterious civilizations of the Mesoamerican area.

A culture that remained little-known until the second half of the 20th century, and yet is of prime importance in the history of Mexico and its region. This is evidenced by"the establishment of Mesoamerican thinking and canons (economic, social, political, intellectual and artistic)", which lasted right up to the time of the Conquistadors.

In all, over 200 pieces will be on display, some of them for the very first time outside Mexico. It's an opportunity to discover"the immense diversity ofthe pre-Columbian world of the Gulf cultures, a multicultural dynamic unfolding through a multitude of artistic traditions, beliefs and rites, languages, and in a complex web of political and economic relations". How about a trip to the Musée du Quai Branly, folks?
