After a wonderful opening back in February 2020, the Otto Freundlich exhibition at the Musée de Montmartre is back from May 30, 2020 with new safety measures. The loveliest (and hidden) museum in Paris devotes a complete exhibition to the German painter and sculptor also knows as the pioneer of non-figurative art.
About 80 works gathered for this first kind of exhibition in a Parisian museum since 1969. Sculptures, paintings, stained-glass windows, mosaics, graphic works. As well as a selection of written documents and letters from artist friends… Major testimonies of the painter’s daily life.
Moved by deep humanism, he sought after spirituality in his painting, through the fusion of color and shape (lines, half-ogives) creating a sort of cyclone that would give birth to a better world.
His life – as much as his aesthetical reflection – gave birth to a work of a moral and political dimension that will help spread abstraction.
To go further, the exhibition will also take over the Sacré Coeur where will be displayed two of his stained-glass windows. This is also the occasion to release a catalog increasing visitors’ knowledge about Otto Freundlich with essays written by distinguished curators, art historians and specialists of his time.
