Have you heard about the Théâtre du Châtelet? Here are four little stories about this iconic venue in Paris!

The Théâtre du Châtelet is this iconic cultural temple proudly sitting in the heart of Paris since 1862. But what do you really know about it? Head of Historic and Cultural Heritage at the Théâtre du Châtelet Olivier Lefebvre tells us more about it!

1862: BOX OFFICES OF THE THEATER

At the beginning, two “ticket offices” are planned at the opening of the Théâtre du Châtelet. The first one in the “Grand Vestibule” [Great Hall] for main seats, and the second one in the “Couloirs des queues” [Corridor of queues] for secondary seats!

1900: VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY GUSTAV MAHLER

For the second show of Tuesday June 19th, 1900 at 2:30 p.m., feeling ill (the heatwave is almost unbearable for a few days), Mahler passes out when arriving at the theater. He had to be taken to the caretaker’s lodge so that he can lay down on a bed. It’s at the end of the performance that he would be able to go up the music stand.

1950: ANNIE GET YOUR GUN

On opening night, Lily Fayol (playing Annie) has to enter for the first scene riding a horse. It’s a burst of laughter that greets the actress: in its ardor, the horse has taken a piece of the background away.

1965: MONSIEUR CARNAVAL

Georges Guétary and Jean Richard are fighting to get the headline of the show for weeks prior to the creation of this new show written by Charles Aznavour!

It’s the Châtelet director, Maurice Lehmann, who will be the trouble-shooter and will face the successive threats of the two French stars to quit the production in case their name is not the first one…
