Paris Musée d’Orsay invites you from May 19 to July 11, 2021 to discover the latest exhibition, Girault de Prangey – Photographer. A retrospective on the career of one of the greatest names of the debuts of photography in France.

A dive into the debuts of photography in France… This is what the Musée d'Orsay offers with the brand-new exhibition focusing on pictures by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, called Girault de Prangey – Photographer and running from May 19 to July 11, 2021.

This is the very first monography focusing on the artist’s photographic work and which goal is to show visitors “the vision and work method of an artist keen to renew the story compared with architecture and styles”.

All in all, about a hundred “daguerreotypes” (a photographic process designed by Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre, creating a picture without a negative on a surface made of pure silver, polished like a mirror, directly exposed to the sun) are presented to curious, as well as paper photographs, paintings, drawings, lithographs, and other illustrated books, taking “a new approach situation this corpus with the photographic work”.  Pictures shot between 1842 and 1844, “during a classic journey around the Mediterranean from Italy to Egypt by way of Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jerusalem and Palestine”.

The exhibition emphasizes the “look of Girault de Prangey on Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral” offering overall views contrasting with studies in close shots “as bold as pioneer in the daguerreotype technique”. In other words, the occasion to discover a photographer virtually unknown and the debuts of an art that kept on evolving and improving… Let’s run to the Musée d’Orsay, shall we?
