The Musée d'Orsay invites you to discover its new exhibition, Girault de Prangey, photographe, from May 19 to July 11, 2021. A retrospective on the career of one of the major figures in the early days of photography in France.

A plunge into the beginnings of photography in France... That's what the Musée d'Orsay has in store for you with its brand-new exhibition of photographs by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, entitled Girault de Prangey, photographe, from May 19 to July 11, 2021.

This is the very first monograph to focus on the artist's photographic work, and its aim is to show visitors"the vision and working method of an author committed to renewing the comparative history of architecture and styles".

In all, some one hundred"daguerreotypes" (a photographic process perfected by Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre, producing an image without a negative on a pure silver surface, polished like a mirror and exposed directly to light) are on display to the curious, as well as photographs on paper, paintings, drawings, lithographs and other illustrated works, "set against works by his contemporaries". The photographs were taken between 1842 and 1844, "during a tour of the Mediterranean basin from Italy to Egypt, via Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jerusalem and Palestine".

Particular emphasis is also placed on"Girault de Prangey's view of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris", contrasting general views with close-up studies"as daring as they were pioneering in the daguerreotype technique". In short, an opportunity to discover a photographer little known to the general public, and the beginnings of an art that has never ceased to evolve and perfect itself... Shall we head off to the Musée d'Orsay, folks?
