The Institut du Monde Arabe is decked out in rhinestones and glitter to welcome "Divas, d'Oum Kalthoum à Dalida". The exhibition, on view from May 19 to July 25 2021, portrays the great female artists of 20th-century Arab music and cinema.

TheInstitut du Monde Arabe pays tribute to all the women who made up the golden age of Arab cinema and music. Come and admire the portraits of these talented stars by visiting the exhibition Divas, d'Oum Kalthoum à Dalida, from May 19 to July 25, 2021. A journey filled with songs, never-before-seen photos, film extracts, movie posters and concert posters that will fill your eyes with stars.

Legendary artists, timeless icons, strong women, avant-garde pioneers, the Divas exhibition is a true token of love for all those actresses and singers who played a part in the evolution of post-war Arab societies, and who remain today references adored by all. Oum Kalthoum, Warda al-Djazaïria, Asmahan, Fayrouz, Laila Mourad, Samia Gamal, Souad Hosni, Sabah, Dalida... They are many, and they are brought together in a magnificent journey.

Amidst personal objects, glittering stage dresses, period photographs, excerpts from legendary films and concerts, rare interviews and cinema posters, we discover the lives and struggles of these women, and above all theinfluence they had on the patriarchal societies in which they lived.

The exhibition tells the story of feminist struggles and the history of Arab women in countries caught up in the struggle forindependence and decolonization.

Spread over 1,000 m² of exhibition space, the exhibition is divided into four acts. We move from pioneering women to feminist avant-gardists, then on to the success of musicals. We end with the views of today'sartists on these divas, whose legacy is a profound source of inspiration for a whole new generation.

You can already get a foretaste of this great exhibition at theIMA Summer Club, the lively rooftop where you can dance to the rhythms of legendary female singers from the Arab world. As for the opening of the exhibition, this will of course depend on government measures and the evolution of the epidemic.
