The Musée du Quai Branly widens it exhibition spaces to present 36 works from the Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière collection starting from November 26, 2020. Valued to 52 million euros, Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière’s donation is the biggest donation of African and Oceanian works of art since 1945.

Big novelty at the Musée du Quai Branly: 36 works from Africa and Oceania joins in the museum’s collections and a new space designed by Jean Nouvel to enjoy works closer and in an “intimate” setting. These works of art have been given to France by business man and collector Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière in 2018.

Among these works, there are Nkishi Songye protective statue (Kalebwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, 19th century), the Senufo Seated Maternity (Côte d’Ivoire, North, before 1952) and the Baule Seated Male Figure (Côte d’Ivoire, 19th century). A Malagan mask from Tabar island, in New-Ireland, from the 20th century and an anthropomorph mask from the 19th century giving pride of place to the Dan people living in the center-west of Côte d’Ivoire are also included in the collection. Some of these works have been displayed in 2016-2017 as part of the Eclectique exhibition.

According to the museum’s release, Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière’s donations aims at “becoming the revolving points of historic, artistic, anthropologic reflections through a series of exhibitions […] and will be linked to an ambitious scientific and cultural project”. They will be highlighted as part of events such as the Barthelemy Toguo exhibition expected in 2021.
