Photographer Gregory Halpern has set up shop at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, for the duration of an exhibition. Entitled Soleil cou coupé, this exhibition brings together numerous photographs taken during his travels in Guadeloupe in 2019. Inhabitants, fauna, flora, nothing escapes the lens of this American artist, who shares his work with us until January 3, 2021. The exhibition remains closed until further notice.
This exhibition is the fruit of a residency led by the American artist as part of the Immersion program of the Hermès corporate foundation. Inspired by the poetry ofAimé Césaire and by life on the islands of Guadeloupe, Gregory Halpern shot every corner of this little piece of France with his camera. He selected some of the most beautiful and surprising photos to exhibit in Paris, at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Imbued with surrealism, these pictures are striking for their beauty, the power of color, light and composition. Through these photos, the history of Guadeloupe takes shape, theancient history and that which is lived in the moment, every moment. Despite the exuberant beauty of nature and natural scenery, Gregory Halpern has strived to find the surprising, the new, and sometimes the tragic, to stay away from postcard clichés.
The result is a magnificent, rich and powerful exhibition that takes us on an encounter with a land and its proud, vulnerable inhabitants, all too far away from us. Don't delay in discovering this exhibition, and if you can, book your trip to Guadeloupe!
