The Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny welcomes the Terra Foundation for American Art and some 90 landscapes from its collections, from September 12, 2020 to January 3, 2021, for an exceptional exhibition. The exhibition L'Atelier de la nature, 1860-1910. Invitation to the Terra Collection. unveils Impressionist masterpieces created by American painters. Loans from the Musée d'Orsay, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Société de Géographie complete this exhibition of a thousand colors.

Between 1860 and 1910, American artists greatly evolved their relationship with nature. These painters moved from meticulous description and imitation of the landscapes before them to subjective expression of nature. From the wide open spaces of America, they turned to small scenes, to the intimate, everyday spectacles offered by the environment.

In this exhibition, divided into five sections, we discover all the stages in this artistic evolution, each with its followers and great masters. L'Atelier de la nature also addresses three major themes:artistic influence, national identity and man's relationship with nature.

While most of the landscapes on display here show a people in harmony with nature, others are a warning about the possibility of its loss, and the impact of human settlement, tourism andurbanization. Questions that persist to this day.

The works on display feature a rich use of color, from the soft, pastel hues of early morning to the vivid variations of wilderness. Each artist has his or her own style and personal way of depicting the landscapes in front of them.

The many paintings, prints and photographs in this exhibition are mostly preserved across the Atlantic, in Chicago. Don't miss this opportunity to discover the magnificent works created by American artists. Head to the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny for one of the great exhibitions of the moment!
