The Musée Jacquemart-André invites lovers of Italian painting to discover an exhibition on Sandro Botticelli from September 10, 2021 to January 24, 2022.

A sacred monster of the Italian Renaissance, and one of Florence's greatest artists, comes to Paris... The Musée Jacquemart-André invites the curious to plunge into the heart of the works of the Italian genius Sandro Botticelli, through an exhibition dedicated to him from September 10, 2021 to January 24, 2022. The exhibition will benefit from loans from institutions such as the Louvre, the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Vatican Museums and Libraries, the Uffizi Gallery and the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.

A retrospective focusing on the artist and his studio activity in the second half of the 15th century, offering art lovers some forty works, as well as paintings by his Florentine contemporaries, on whom Botticelli had a particular influence. Botticelli is best known for two of his greatest masterpieces, The Birth of Venus and Spring, which bear witness to the influence and changes in Florentine society during the Medici reign.

The exhibition also highlights the importance of workshop practice, between original creation and mass production, typical of the Renaissance. It also presents the artist as creator, entrepreneur and trainer. And one question, above all, lies at the heart of this exhibition: what is an authentic work of art in the Renaissance? For this is what workshop practice was all about at the time: a master who supervises the work of his disciples, but does not take commissions, yet signs his works alone.

The exhibition also illustrates Botticelli's stylistic development, as well as the links between his work and the culture of his time, his relationship with the Medici and his vision of painting, which takes greater account of linear perspectives, as outlined in Leon Battista Alberti's treatise De Pictura, which undoubtedly revolutionized Renaissance painting. An opportunity to discover an artist and his work without having to go to the Uffizi Gallery. Shall we book a ticket, folks?
