From October 13, 2021 to May 30, 2022, the Musée de l'Homme invites us to go on an initiatory journey, “Aux frontières de l'humain”. Contemporary works of art, museographic items, multimedia devices and audiovisual screening create a full tour wondering about the very essence of humanity.
Art, sport, capacity to improve or replace parts of one’s body, the ability to speak, inventiveness… How can one describe Humans? What makes us unique beings in the universe? Be rest assured, this is not the beginning of a long rhetorical lecture, these are simply questions tormenting us for centuries and given pride of place in the new exhibition of the Musée de l’Homme!
This compelling exhibition revolves around six chapters framed by an introduction and an epilog. Animal-man, champion-human able to break records when it comes to strength, cyborg-man fitted with prothesis, implants and exoskeletons…
And soon, mutant-man? A scientifically-improved human being fitted with supernatural skills?
Between artificial limbs and genetical improvements, where does the border between ethic and human stand? Will you be ready to have an in brito baby with chosen features and safe from transmittable diseases?
Then comes the ultimate question? Will men become a sort of superman, an immortal being safe from diseases and ageing thanks to medical breakthroughs? Unfortunately, this utopia is put at risk by another factor: environment and climate change not enabling us to live for ever.
With animal species declining and the earth's resources jeopardized, what would be the alternatives, then?
But at the end of the day, isn’t this the very essence of Human: acute awareness of their fragility and desire to thrive and live despite it all?
These fascinating questions and scenarios are to be enjoyed at the Musée de l’Homme providing us with captivating food for thoughts. Curious people, dreamers, science and fiction fans, you know what exhibition to visit now!
Please note this temporary exhibition comes along with an access to the free Sneakers exhibition focusing on the story of these famous shoes.
