The Musée Cernuschi invites Asian art fans to discover their latest exhibition running from November 5, 2021 to March 6, 2022 and called “Peindre hors du Monde, Moines et lettrés des dynasties Ming et Qing”. A never-before-seen dive into the heart of three centuries of Chinese paintings and calligraphies, displayed in Europe for the very first time.

A never-before-seen dive in to the story of Chinese painting and calligraphy… From November 5, 2021 to March 6, 2022, the Musée Cernuschi proposes us to discover their latest exhibition “Peindre hors du monde, Moines et lettrés des dynasties Ming et Qing” or “Painting outside the world, Monks and well-read people from the Ming and Qing dynasties”. This exhibition is co-curated with the Hong-Kong art museum, and covers the entire Ming (1368-1644) and Qing eras (1644-1912), inviting Asian art lovers to look at works by the greatest masters of this time.

In all, a hundred masterpieces expect curious people, staging gardens, landscapes and mountains, painters’ preferred topics throughout these two dynasties. Under the Ming era, the landscape genre has a fundamental part in the story of Chinese painting, especially since the Song dynasty. They are “invested with many significations, showing collective practices, as well as more private aspirations”. Many artists such as Shen Zhou or even Wen Zhengming depict landscapes as a “poetic image of an ideal shared by many well-read people in their time”.

Under the Qing era, mountain is the most inspiring topic, seen as a shelter for Manchurians’s opponents who conquered the empire after the fall of the Ming dynasty. For instance, this is the case of Shitao or Badashanren, artists and members of the fallen imperial family who found shelter and isolated in the mountains, dressing as monks. A fantastic exhibition whether you are more into gardens or mountains you really want to visit!
