A curious walk down memory lane in the heart of an exclusive vision of Wonderland. From May 25 to July 15, 2022, Montreuil Maison Populaire devotes an exhibition to American artist Julia Scher, Wonderland,.
Second section of the “The Artificial Kids” exhibition cycle, this retrospective offers a multimedia environment: a small control desk suiting children’s size, surrounded by distorting mirrors, bathing in a bright purple light with a voice warning the audience. “Cameras are filming you […] Careful. Your size could change”, it says. Welcome to Wonderland!
As for the first cycle, it started in 1996 with pictures of seven children in school outfits: Lena, Grace, Andy, Andre, Brandon, Jodi and Zoë. Some wave batons, others cameras… The installation changes over the course of years with new pictures. The second cycle, displayed here, is the consequence or so of this series of pictures: a child-sized world where children surveil adults, “forced to regress in the reflection of mirrors”.
A multimedia exhibition, especially designed for children, using the context of the Maison Populaire too since adherents are mostly children “encouraged to let their parents outside”. It also parodies “the relationships parents have with protection, threatening, and their own infantilization in surveillance contexts”.
To discover with your family urgently if you and your kids love art!
