Have you heard about André Devambez, a surprising artist who lived at the Belle Epoque? Now quite little-known, the Petit Palais wished to shine a light on the eclectic and surprising works of this man with overflowing imagination, both a painter, engraver and illustrator, anchored into his time. In partnership with the Renne Fine Art Museum, the “Vertigo of the imagination” exhibition present a never-before-seen retrospective of 250 pieces between fantasy and modernity.
Born in Paris, the artist loves the city and is inspired daily for his pieces. Parisians, metro, cafés, shows, Devambez grasps all the looks and landscapes, as well as the society topics that speak to him, like WWI, balancing between lightness and seriousness. Fascinated by modern inventions, he represents cars, double-decker buses, airships and planes, very accurately. He also becomes an artist for kids’ books, he sometimes writes, as well as for Zola’s books or even Le Figaro Illustré. But he does not hesitate to let his imagination overflow, inventing caricatured and curious characters, even childlike.
To sum up his work, in 1913, it was written about him: “Devambez not only does fantasy with real, but real with fantasy”.
