Basquiat x Warhol exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton: final days

Two internationally renowned artists, two painting geniuses, two Americans honored at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, from April 5 to August 28, 2023: discover the artistic collaboration between Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, through an unusual and original exhibition. This crossed look at the two artists allows us to draw a unique portrait of New York in the 1980s, and especially of its urban and underground artistic universe. More than 300 works and documents are on display, including 80 paintings created in total collaboration by the two artists. Individual works by Basquiat and Warhol are also presented, as well as works by contemporary artists, which shed a different light on the two men and their work.

Basquiat's and Warhol's worlds blend, respond to each other, and feed off each other, resulting in innovative works that propagate a new, exciting energy. Both artists are inspired by each other: Basquiat admires the great legendary artist of popular culture, Warhol rediscovers the passions of his beginnings, like painting.

Their artistic collaboration allows them to draw new strength, to try new formats, to convey new messages. The two men converse with each other through their brushes, their canvases, until they form a work that represents them entirely, without it being possible to say precisely who painted what.

The many works on display tell the story of the collaboration of these two unique artists, their paths... And they convey the atmosphere, the New York trends of the 1980s. These colorful, monumental paintings reveal the concerns of the artists of the time. Religion, violence, the appearance of AIDS, racism, representation of the body... These personal experiences become universal, when the two artists share them and represent them on the canvas of a painting.
