Nestled in Paris 8th arrondissement, at the beginning of the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe is one of the must-sees in the French capital open to all visitors and lovers of beautiful view and altitude. A climbing allowing you to discover the story behind the monument. Good news, the monument reopens from May 19, 2021!

A disproportionate construction… This is what we can think when seeing the front of the Arc de Triomphe, another symbol of Paris, after the Eiffel Tower, and a building full of history. Monumental entrance of the “world’s most beautiful avenue”, the Arc de Triomphe has been thought by Napoleon I who has ordered by decree, released on February 18, 1806, the construction of a monument to the glory of the victorious soldiers and the French army.

Initially said to be set around the Bastille and faubourg Saint-Antoine, the monument finally sets at Place de l’Etoile, following the suggestion from the then Minister of the Interior, Champagny. It’s in 1836 that the work ends, under the reign of Louis-Philippe. Today, it houses the tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as the “eternal flame”, as a symbol of remembrance of the soldiers who died on the field.

49.5-m high, 44.82-m large and 22.21-m deep, the Arch is impressive and tops the avenue des Champs-Elysées, in the French capital 8th arrondissement. A monument tourists and lovers of 360°-views can come and visit since the inside is made out of several rooms telling the story of the building, as well as a staircase with 284 steps. Avenue de la Grande Armée, Champs-Elysées, Grand Palais, Louvre in the continuity of the avenue, then, the Sacré-Cœur on one side, the Montparnasse Tower on the other, the Eiffel Tower quite close… The spot is perfect to take breathtaking pictures. More than a view, a well-earned reward after the endless climb that is particularly tiring.
