The Parc des Buttes Chaumont in Paris's 19th arrondissement is one of the city ' s most exceptional parks. In all, nearly 25 hectares of lush greenery and varied landscapes stretch out here. Inaugurated in 1867 under the reign of Napoleon III, this park, laid out like an English garden, was designed by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand.
It was designed to reproduce a mountain landscape. And the effect is successful: between the rocks, alpine meadows, cliffs and streams, you almost feel as if you've left Paris.
For the record, this park was created entirely on the site of a poor, poverty-stricken district that was annexed in 1860, once home to gypsum quarries. At the time, Napoleon III wanted to offer the local poor and peasants a patch of greenery. Inaugurated for the 1867 Universal Exhibition, the Buttes-Chaumont park was intended to replace a filthy, nauseating area with a beautiful green space, and the gamble paid off.
Here, young and old alike play explorer near the grotto and admire the waterfall that is the park's trademark. Many Parisians take advantage of this beautiful green space to bask in the sun, have a picnic or do their sport.
The park is a veritable ode to relaxation and contemplation. It's hard to remain indifferent to the varied landscapes that the Parc des Buttes Chaumont offers its visitors. On the lake's surface, ducks, geese and herons cohabit amid lush vegetation.

Perched high above theIle du Belvédère, the Temple de la Sybille is an eye-catcher, lending an almost mystical dimension to this surprising park. From this height, you can admire a view of Montmartre.
The island and its mysterious kiosk can be reached in two ways: via the stone Pont des Suicidés, or via a suspended wooden footbridge designed by Gustave Eiffel (Yep, the one on the Eiffel Tower).
