La Caverne, the first underground urban farm in Paris

La Caverne is the name of this new urban farm that storm the Parisian underground. A farm that will be inaugurated on Saturday April 14, 2018. Certified organic and producing fresh produce full of nutriments and harvested and delivered the same day, here’s a delightful concept.

La Caverne is the name of the first underground organic farm in Paris! Located under a 300-social housing building in a place that has been left behind. La Caverne offers a true diversity when it comes to the productions and its agronomic approaches in order to develop a new kind of agriculture: the underground permaculture!

This new original farm, covering 3.5000-sqm will produce 150 tons of chicories and 40 tons of mushrooms every year in organic agriculture, that will be commercialized in the neighborhood by the young company Cycloponics, especially at the “Bonne Tambouille” market, set in place Pierre Marc Orlan. 10 full-time positions have been created thanks to this project, including 80% landed by the local inhabitants.

More than ever, Paris intends to develop urban farming. By 2020, the French capital will feature 100 hectares of roofs, facades and green walls, including a third devoted to urban farming. To make it happen, Anne Hidalgo and her deputy Pénélope Komitès launched – in 2016 – the call for projects, Parisculteurs, successfully reconducted in 2017, allowing to process farming in 75 places throughout the French capital. La Caveerne is one of the project that have been carried out to the end and inaugurated by Paris authorities on Saturday April 14.

The concept triggers your curiosity? You should know that you can complete visit-tasting tours. Indeed, leave to discover these undergrounds where the smell of parking lots left for undergrowth scents! Discover how oyster mushrooms, shiitakes, micro-sprouts and soon chicories and button mushrooms are grown… You can discover how each variety is grown, its needs, the production steps. You can discover the cavern truck farming and how this organic underground Parisian farm has been created! The visit ends with tasting micro-sprouts (a selection following availability) to discover the varied flavors: radish, broccoli, watercress, arugula, leek, mustard… You will even leave with a surprise gift!
