Nestled under Palais de la Porte Dorée, a stone’s throw from Parc Zoologique and La Foire du Trône, Aquarium Tropical underwent a makeover. Since fall, and until March, the aquarium rejuvenates. The last time it did it was in 1985, it was about time!
And of course, no renovation works without improvements. The aquarium focused on enhancing the entrance and the exit, on the presentation plates and the visitors welcome, among others. From now on, you can see wall frescoes drew by a former student from the famous Estienne school, inviting us to visit the aquarium.
The second task was to re-write some 350 plates, these cards presenting animals, giving details about each species name, its Latin name, its distribution map and its protection status (protected species, endangered species…). Then, texts bring more information and particular stories about the species. For example, I’ve learnt that piranhas were not necessarily a fierce predator.
Booster seats for children improve the visit as well as 6 interactive stations, full of further information. Backlit posters remind us of the ocean issues and the aquarium missions.
Now, crocodiles have a replanted pit that has been repainted and fitted with a new lighting. And fishes are not left out either with the tanks renovations.
You haven’t been there for a while? Maybe it’s time to go back? You will make the best of it to discover the excellent playful and immersive exhibition entitled “Cyclops, Explorateur de l’océan” [Cyclops, ocean explorer]. An exhibition that is playful and informative at the same time but first and foremost scientific that triggers children’s curiosity and allows them to understand sea universe better, a universe that covers about 70% of the Earth.
A wonderful outing!
