A living exhibition in the heart of nature: this is the latest experience provided by the National Museum of Natural History in the Grandes Serres du Jardin des Plantes. From October 20 to November 15, 2021, discover “Automne Tropical”, an outing surrounded by surprising plants.

Do you enjoy walking around a thousand and one orchids in the winter at the Grandes Serres du Jardin des Plantes? This is good news then, Paris National Museum of Natural History expects us for a very green event this fall, an exhibition-tour just as wonderful.

From October 20 to November 15, 2021 for the Fall break, discover Automne tropical: a living and fantastic plant exhibition. Come and meet epiphytes, these surprising plants living perched in trees, far above the ground.

These peculiar plants hanging on tree trunks have found a clever way to survive and grow. To reach sunbeams in overcrowded environments, to get the humidity and nutrients they need, they have found the trick: they comfortably set above the ground, on the tree trunks around. Then, they grow fleshy stems, succulent leaves or airy roots to get the elements necessary to their growth.

Far from being parasites, these strange and fascinating looking plants contribute to the ecosystem in which they take part.

Although botanists are overwhelmed by epiphytes’ survival ability, amateurs are left in awe because of their beauty and the diversity of these plants with sometimes fantastic designs. Epiphytes create new and surprising landscapes, but always unique, in forests that may seem too common at times.

Also included in the event, a free conference is held on Monday November 8, at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Grande Galerie de l’Evolution. Botanists will tell you about the world of epiphytes and reveal all the secrets of this surprising plant. On the menu of the conference:

Epiphytes are always searching for light and their adaptation capacity is often surprising. Experts will answer the following questions:

  • Where can you see them in natural environment?
  • How do these air species can get rid of the bond to the ground?
  • What relationships with other plants?
  • What role in the ecosystem?

Careful, the Automne Tropical exhibition could trigger an urgent shopping need! Impossible to enjoy these plants without wanting to bring one back home. Fortunately, the museum has thought about everything: a temporary store opens in the Grandes Serres, behind the big rock. Specialized exhibitors will come in turns to the store to sell rare and magnificent species of epiphytes. Tillandsia Prod and Orchidées du Val d’Yerres both have plants fitting your interior.

After this walk in the middle of the most beautiful creations of nature, stop by the Museum of Natural History: the L’Odyssée sensorielle exhibition waits for you there to provide you with always incredible experiences between science and art.
