Le Marais invites you to celebrate Chinese New Year 2023 , or rather Lunar New Year to include all communities, in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris this Saturday, January 21, 2023. This year's event, under the sign of the Water Rabbit (or Water Cat for the Vietnamese), promises a colorful spectacle. This year, the Lunar New Year normally takes place on January 22, so it's a day early that the 3rd arrondissement of Paris awaits you to celebrate the arrival of Spring.
This festive event is organized in partnership with shopkeepers' associations. The event takes place in front of the 3rd arrondissement town hall around 5.30pm, with the show starting at 6pm.
The program includes a beautiful lion and dragon dance, led by some thirty dancers and musicians from the Paris Lion Sport Association. Lasting around thirty minutes, this lovely show marks the arrival of the Spring Festival and, in any case, is a joyous moment to share another culture that is also part of Parisian life.
For the record, the Lion Dance comes from an ancient legend from the Tang Dynasty. It represents the fight against evil and is a symbol of prosperity and peace. That's why it's so prized by the Asian community as an auspicious way to start the year.
The Dragon Dance is also an essential Lunar New Year tradition. Stemming from a Nian legend, it represents bravery, nobility and good fortune, as habitats lit lanterns and set off firecrackers to scare off a ferocious beast that disliked noise and light.
The festive Chinese New Year parade through the Marais will take place this Sunday, January 22, departing from Place de la République. Don't miss it at 2.30pm.
