The Centre Pompidou pays tribute to Henri Matisse, with an exceptional and original exhibition exploring the links between literature and the painter. The exhibition runs from October 21, 2020 to February 22, 2021. And to tide us over during the confinement, the museum has put together a 13-minute online tour of 10 works.

The Centre Pompidou explores a new facet ofHenri Matisse in an exhibition to mark the famous painter's 150th birthday . What is there left to say about Henri Matisse? Or rather, what new and innovative things are left to say about Henri Matisse? We could make a novel out of all the stories that made up the painter's life. Come and discover it from October 21, 2020 to February 22, 2021.

Curated by Aurélie Verdier of the Musée national d'art moderne, the exhibition brings together some of the painter's great classic works, but gives us the opportunity to rediscover them by presenting them in a new way.

The works presented come from the Musée National d'Art Moderne, as well as from the collections of the two museums dedicated to Matisse, Cateau-Cambrésis and Nice. The Grenoble museum and international private loans complete the picture.

This is the biggest exhibition since the 1970 retrospective at the Grand Palais! Let's not miss this opportunity!

In nine chapters, theexhibition tells the story of how literature acted as a creative breeding ground for the painter. This exhibition is his life, told like a novel. From his beginnings in 1890 to the 1950s, each period of his life is interspersed with a literary interlude, reminding us of the origins of certain works, his links with great authors such as Mallarmé, whose poems were illustrated by Matisse, or Louis Aragon, author ofHenri Matisse, roman .

It's not just literature as such that is honored in the painter's work. This exhibition also highlights the way in which the painter's pictorial language changes, how his words of paint adapt to changes, both intimate and social. It provides a complete dimension for revisiting the artist's masterpieces, as well as aborted projects, attempts and previously unpublished works!

One can't help but be amazed and astonished by theabundance of works in this exhibition. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, magazines, press articles... Wherever you look, there's always a work to greet you. We also appreciate the variety of the paintings on display, which retraces theevolution of the artist's style and career.

Take a look at 10 of the works in the exhibition, with commentary by curator Aurélie Verdier, before strolling around the 230 works and 70 documents and archives on display.
