On the monumental side, the Palais Galliera, a showcase for thehistory of fashion in Paris, should also have been included in the Heritage Days program. Originally, the museum was the brainchild of the Duchess of Galliera, to house her art collection. Following her death in 1888, the architect Paul-René-Léon Ginain continued the already advanced work, completing the monument in early 1894. Finally, in 1895, the site was inaugurated as a Museum of Industrial Art, and was finally dedicated to fashion in 1977, by the Paris City Council. Today, the Palais Galliera is a legendary Parisian landmark, distinguished by its Beaux-Arts aesthetic and its privileged square overlooking the Eiffel Tower. The rooms and galleries still house the collections of the great couturiers who have embroidered thehistory of fashion over the years.
