This past July, in Paris, the issue related to self-service electric scooters has sparked a debate. More recently, the polemic about their use has escalated especially because of several accidents recently shared in the press, including the death of Miriam – a thirty-year-old female who has been struck on Voie Georges Pompidou by two people riding an electric scooter who fled after the crash.
This Thursday January 13, 2022, the Police Prefecture has issued a decree in order to temporarily limit "the circulation of electric scooters between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m." on the Champs-Elysées, "between the rond-point des Champs-Elysées included and the Place Charles de Gaulle included". The Police's decree is instated until February 15, 2022.
To justify the decision, Paris Police Prefecture insists on "gatherings of people" who enter "races (...) by adopting risky behavrios", as well as the current Africa Cup of Nations, the soccer competition running until February 6.
According to the prefecture, the ACN "will attract lots of foreign tourists, especially supporters cheering on their national teams in the competition on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, a highly symbolical place, included in the evening".
Transgressors to the decree are likely to be fined up to €1,500, as well as getting the engines used put out of action.
